Although God’s hand is all over every aspect of our time in Zambia, two events from 2012 stand out as shining examples of God moving through the work of African Vision of Hope. The team traveled to our farmland located in Chikumbi. We went to look at the progress made since our time there the year before. We hadn’t planned to do anything formal- VBS or Bible studies. But God had plans! The longer we stayed, the more local people arrived. Since we went willing to be used in whatever way He had planned, the team immediately gathered what supplies we had with us and held a mini vacation Bible school for the children, a youth lesson, and bible classes for men and for women and wellness checks by our medical volunteer. A trip that was meant for sightseeing turned into a day that saw many villagers hear the Gospel and accept Jesus.
The team was privileged to worship at Bethlehem Baptist Church, a church that one of African Vision of Hope’s sponsored seminary students felt God asking him to start in the middle of an immense trash dump/landfill called Independence Village. Among constantly burning trash, a church has been built using whatever board or piece of cardboard that could be found. A small building without much of a roof, it is full of the presence of the Father, our Savior and the Holy Spirit. Voices are lifted in absolute joy and gratitude to the One who loves each and every one of us.
God is moving mountains in Zambia through the work of AVOH. Children are being fed, receiving medical attention and an education. Adults are gainfully employed. Communities and generations are being changed for the better. Most importantly, the Gospel of Jesus Christ is being shared with all.
It’s incredibly hard to explain how working in Zambia affects a person. All it takes is a willingness to serve as He calls us to in His word. A willingness to be changed; a willingness to love. If you allow yourself to be used, either here or abroad, you will never be the same. Ever- praise God!
