“My uncle told me, ‘You marry this old man because he will give you something to eat and he will give us money.’”

Esther sits outside her house listening to her young life being traded for cows. She is being sold into marriage to a gray-haired man who will pay her dowry in return for her life. 13-year-olds are being forced into marriage. 10-year-old girls are having to compromise themselves so they can have shelter. 8-year-old AIDS orphans are becoming the heads of the household, left to care for their younger siblings and infants. This is not the life for little girls; a generation of children raising each other. They want to be in a classroom, not in the streets. They want to be able to lay their head down at night and not have to worry about being exploited, sold or beaten. They want books, not to be brides. When the African Vision of Hope Girls House of Hope Orphanage is completed, girls like Esther will go from poverty to possibility, from hopelessness to healed. Be part of that transformation. To celebrate the opening of the House of Hope, we are throwing a “shower” for all of the furnishings required to complete the orphanage.
