My time to learn is now, I want to start at the beginning and move forward with my life. I want to learn and to be educated. – Judith
Judith started school for the first time. She dressed herself in her brand new uniform and stepped out of her home to start the walk to school. There is no one there to celebrate this momentous day with her, both of her parents have passed away. Judith has always longed to go to school and start first grade but never believed it was possible, especially for a girl who is about to turn 17.
Judith grew up like so many in Zambia; “My sister and I worked out in the fields in the sun, in the cold, in the rain. We worked so that we could eat. Schooling was not a priority, work was.” For Judith and her sister there was never time allowed to dream about school until the work was finished. The problem was it was never finished.
Both of Judith’s parents passed away before she was 9 years old, she was forced to live with an Aunt who mistreated and abused her. At the age of 15 her Aunt wanted to marry Judith off so she would have one less mouth to feed and she could collect a dowry. Judith instead ran away from home to her older sister’s house near one of the African Vision of Hope schools.
Judith has never in her life stepped inside a classroom. She cannot read, write or count but she believes that having an education for herself will eliminate the hardships she has had in her life. Judith knows that school will be difficult but she told us, “My time to learn is now, I want to start at the beginning and move forward with my life. I want to learn and to be educated.”
Judith and many others are waiting to take that journey forward. That journey starts with your support. For $30 per month you can provide for one of these beautiful young hearts that are so desperate to get that start.
