Mike Germaine

Mike Germaine will put Christmas in your heart all year ’round. We call him the “Santa Claus” of African Vision of Hope because every time he comes to the office he brings tons of awesome supplies to send to Zambia. Lately, he has supplied essential supplies for the Girls House of Hope Orphanage.

When asked what drew Mike to African Vision of Hope, he will tell you it was the Holy Spirit. “One day I was singing in my church choir and we were singing the song “Give Me your Eyes.”

The lyrics go:

Give me Your eyes for just one second
Give me Your eyes so I can see
Everything that I keep missing
Give me Your love for humanity
Give me Your arms for the broken-hearted
The ones that are far beyond my reach
Give me Your heart for the ones forgotten
Give me Your eyes so I can see

“After we were done singing we walked off the stage and a member of my church, who was an African Vision of Hope volunteer, approached me. She knew that I liked to go to auctions and estate sales and asked if I would be willing to keep an eye out for sewing machine repair tools. They would use them on their next trip to Zambia. That is where it all began. The Lord gave me eyes to see the needs of the women in Zambia.”

Mike spent 26 years in the Air Force and after that he spent 20 years as a mailman. He was a Master Sergeant in in the Air Force and was in charge of radar. He was also there during the beginning stages of GPS and also helped build the weather radar systems we see on TV today. Mike has been going to auctions and estate sales in his free time since the 80’s, but now that he is retired he has made it his full-time profession. He has been finding goodies for our schools in Zambia and the women’s ministry for 8 years. He says “You all ask me to find things you need for Zambia, I pray about it, and the next week I find it!”

Health problems have kept him from going to Zambia and seeing the blessings his “findings” have brought. We asked him what keeps him coming back to African Vision of Hope and he says “It feels good in my heart. When you hear about the ladies in the Women’s ministry who make a business out of the stuff most of us would just throw away, like plastic bags and soda tabs, it gets to you.”

Mike is a self-professed “retired old grumpy man” but to us he is Santa Mike. Thank you, Mike, for all of the supplies you have provided the students, staff, Empowerment Program, and farm at African Vision of Hope campuses in Zambia.
