She is a double orphan who lost both of her parents to AIDS. Queen had to grow up quickly and became the head of the household. She was given the responsibility of fetching water, cooking meals, and earning an income – all things that were keeping her out of school.
Even worse, more than half of the girls in Queen’s village are sold into marriage by the age of 14. Others face the looming threat of kidnapping and human trafficking. As a young girl, Queen was particularly vulnerable to these realities. Something had to be done.
Our response, a village of rescue homes we are calling the Village of Hope in Chongwe. These life-changing homes will hold 24 children each and have one house parent. This “village” is for children like Queen who are orphans, at risk of being trafficked, or are fleeing abuse. The 4-acre campus will be home to 144 students and is within walking distance of African Vision of Hope School in Chongwe. Sanitation facilities will be on-site as well as a campus kitchen and community center.
Queen has been rescued and given a place in an intermediate rescue home while the Village of Hope is being built. She is receiving an education and has the freedom to dream about her future. She is safe, healthy, and cared for.
